Mallet Percussion Workshop

With visiting artist Nick Parnell

  • For school students aged 10-18yrs, and interested school teachers and music teachers.
  • Ideal for: Percussionists, Drummers, Piano players, Teachers.


Learn all about the latest playing techniques from Australia’s leading vibraphonist and percussionist in this interactive workshop. Covering topics from how to get started on playing tuned percussion instruments through to the latest mallet techniques. Whether you play percussion in a school band, play piano or drums at home, or are interested in learning for the first time, this hands-on workshop will give you detailed tips on how to sound the best you can! Observers welcome also.

Nick Parnell: Vibes Virtuoso

Celebrated as one of the most exciting vibraphone players in the world today, Nick Parnell gives the instrument a genre-bending makeover, creating a whole new listening experience. In his unique recitals with piano accompanist Michael Ierace, Parnell expands the classical repertoire for vibraphone with his own imaginative arrangements of favourites like Gershwin’s Summertime, Albeniz’s Tango, and Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. Parnell’s festival appearances include Adelaide and Melbourne International Festivals of the Arts, Canberra International Music Festival, Adelaide Contemporary Music Festival, Barossa Music Festival, and Womadelaide.

Inspiring opportunities for students to work with players for the Sydney Symphony orchestra. In the brass ensemble workshop, students will be conducted by an SSO player and work on their ensemble skills, with SSO brass players playing alongside the students. In the string masterclass, students will have the opportunity to play for SSO string players and receive their feedback, guidance and professional tips.

Campbell Diamond: Classical Guitar Recital

Originally from Dubbo, Campbell Diamond is an internationally award-winning classical guitarist and graduate of the ANU School of Music, where he studied with the renowned Tim Kain. Campbell began learning guitar at Macquarie Conservatorium and through Riverina Conservatorium. A prize winner at national and international competitions, Campbell has given concerts across Australia and in Japan and Europe. Campbell travels to Germany in late 2014 for advanced studies at the Koblenz International Guitar Academy. The recital includes Spanish and South American music by Rodrigo and Piazzolla.

Classical Guitar Masterclass

with visiting artist Campbell Diamond

An opportunity for guitar students to play for and learn from a leading young guitarist. Campbell Diamond has studied with Australia’s greatest guitar teacher, Tim Kain, and also participated in masterclasses with leading international guitarists Ricardo Gallen, Carlo Barone and Pavel Steidl. This hands-on masterclass will provide students with useful feedback and technical tips. Observers welcome also.
$7 entry for all participants and observers

Preparing AMEB General Knowledge & Aural Tests

Sunday 22 June
  • 2.30-4.00pm for Preliminary–Grade 3 students
  • 4.15-5.45pm for Grades 4-8 students


Research, organise and learn your general knowledge
Understand and practice your aural tests
Attending these workshops will help with exam preparation and give students useful tips and practice on what to do in the exam.
Please note these workshops are for Macquarie Conservatorium students only.
Registrations are essential: please register by Tuesday 10 June.
What to bring: your AMEB exam music, your instrument, pencil and rubber, and a music dictionary if you have one.
$10 entry fee, payable at the workshop on the day
